| Son | William and Henrietta's son Charles was born in January 1896 at New York. |
| Note* | There is a possibility that on 8 January 1900, William John Chitty and Henrietta Haughey and some of their children lived at 802 Courtland Street, West Hoboken, Hudson County, New Jersey, which is the address daughter Charlotte gave at the time of her wedding.12 |
| Occupation* | He was an oysterman on 18 June 1900.1,8 |

| Census1910FedUS* | He and Henrietta Haughey appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of New York City, New York, at 38 Bedford Street, enumerated 23 April 1910. Their children Margaret, Grace, William and Charles M. were listed as living with them, There was also a person listed as a servant in the household. Her name is illegible, something like Bertha/Martha Leny/Leu..., and she is shown as single, age 24, born NY, parents Russian (spoke Yiddish).9 |
| Num Child* | He and Henrietta Haughey were shown in the 1900 census as having had 10 children, nine surviving at that date. In 1910, they claimed that of their 10 children, only five were still living. Family recollection is also that there were 10 children, but my research shows that at least eight of the children survived until the 1910 census. There is a possibility that Bessie and Gussie were the same person, although that would bring the number of identified children down to 9.9,2,17 |
| Residence | At the time of his death William John Chitty lived at 240 West 10th Street, New York City, New York, and was a fish packer, probably at Fulton Fish Market..4 |
| Death* | On 14 July 1912, William John Chitty drowned in the East River at Rutgers Street, New York City, New York, at age 57. This location is about a 1/2 mile upriver from where the Fulton Fish market was located at the time. Family lore is that William was a champion swimmer and drowned while trying to swim the East River with his shoes on, on a dare. His death certificate verifies the place and cause of death, but some mystery still surrounds it. Various children and grandchildren were told that William drowned in the year 1900, specifically, when his daughter Margaret was 7. Margaret herself repeated the story that after William's death, Henrietta was left with numerous young children and had them each learn a trade (Margaret's being bookkeeping). In fact, however, William attended Margaret's wedding to Howard Tucker Bailey, so it is not a matter of him being absent from family life. There is ample proof he lived with his family in 1900 and 1910 and at the time of his death.18,2,4,19,20 |
| Burial* | He was buried on 18 July 1912 at Flower Hill Cemetery, 5433 Kennedy Boulevard, North Bergen, Hudson County, New Jersey; the undertaker was Stephen Merritt.4 |
| Note* | William was remembered by his family as a longshoreman.2 |
