ChartsHoward Louis Bailey Family Tree
RelationshipGreat-grandfather of Howard Louis Bailey.
Name Variation Charles Augustus Bailey was also known as Augustus Bailey.3,5,14
Birth*He was born on 3 May 1844 in either at Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, or Orange County, New York. Although his father, possibly his mother, and all of his siblings were apparently born in Marlborough, and his parents are shown as living there their whole lives, it is stated in both the 1855 and 1875 NY state censuses that Charles was born in Orange County, NY.1,15,3,4,16,7,8,14,10,11,17,9,18,19,13
Census1850FedUS*He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census in the household of Josiah Merrit at Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, enumerated 26 September 1850.1
(with Parents) Census1855StateSimUSHe appeared on the 1855 State Census of Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, in the household of his parents, James W. Bailey and Elizabeth Bloomer.20
NoteCharles was enumerated twice in 1860, both enumerations taking place on 25 July 1860. In one he was shown with his parents, and in the other with Samuel Stillwell and family. The Stillwells were presumably related, at least by marriage, via Jennette Parmalee Stillwell, who was also listed with Samuel. Charles married Ida Parmalee in 1864. I have not yet researched the relationship. Charles was probably working for Samuel on his farm.
(with Parents) Census1860FedUSHe appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, in the household of his parents, James W. Bailey and Elizabeth Bloomer.4
(Witness) Census1860FedUSHe appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, in the household of Samuel Stillwell and Jennette May Parmelee.3
OccupationHe was a farm laborer on 25 July 1860.4,21
ResidenceHe lived on 27 October 1861 at Marlborough, Ulster County, New York.22
Description*On 28 October 1861, Charles Augustus Bailey was described variously as 5' 7", with either light complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair or dark complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. His occupation was given as laborer and carpenter.23,24
Military*He served on the Union side during the Civil War. On 28 October 1861, he began a planned three-year enlistment when he joined P.C. Regan's Company (Company A) of the 7th New York Independent Battery at Camp Van Wyck, Newburgh, Orange County, New York. On 31 May, 1862, at the Battle of Seven Pines at Fair Oaks, Virginia, he was shot in the neck while trying to extricate his cannon from mud while under fire. The bullet passed through his jaw, permanently removing part of the bone. Family recollection is that his brother Walter, with whom he was serving, found him wounded, picked him up and laid him in a brook so that the water flowed through the wound, thus saving his life. Surgeons were unable to replace the lower jaw, and Charles grew a beard at 18 years of age to hide the lack of a chin. Peg Bailey Blackburn noted that "all of us up through my generation have vivid memories of this great-grandfather and his little beard which was snowy white in our day. Parts of Charles' uniform, which Charles Louis Bailey had, are now in the museum at the battlefield of Fredericksburg, VA." Violet Bailey Todd recalled that Charles "had had his jaw bone shot off. He grew a long white beard to cover this. I do remember when I was quite small, sitting on his lap and twisting that beard this way and that." Charles was sent to White House Landing (Virginia) for medical care, and he was discharged 1 September 1862 from Fort Wood, Bedloes Island, New York. (Bedloes Island is where the Statue of Liberty was later built.) His invalid pension was back-dated to this date.25,26,27,28,29,30,31,18,23,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39
ResidenceHe lived between 1 September 1862 and October 1878 at Marlborough, Ulster County, New York. However, note the discrepencies mentioned in the 1880 census, below.29,32,38,30,31
OccupationHe was a carpenter on 4 April 1863.29
Marriage*He married Ida J. Parmalee, daughter of William L. Parmalee and Rosetta Brower, on 23 October 1864 at Newburgh, Orange County, New York.40,5,13,41,42
Census1865StateSimUS*He and Ida J. Parmalee appeared on the 1865 State Census of Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, enumerated 1 June 1865.5
Son*Charles and Ida's son Nathaniel Irving was born on 6 August 1865.
SonCharles and Ida's son William Augustus Parmalee was born between 1866 and 1868. The date was probably 18 August 1867. See the notes under William's record.
SonCharles and Ida's son James Edgar was born on 14 February 1869.
OccupationHe was a carpenter on 1 June 1870.7
Census1870FedUS*He and Ida J. Parmalee appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, enumerated 15 July 1870. Their children Nathaniel Irving, James Edgar and William Augustus Parmalee were listed as living with them. Immediately prior to Charles and Ida's household in the enumeration was a dwelling owned by Mary Doughty Brower. The two families after Charles and Ida were those of William and Rosetta Brower Parmalee (Ida's parents), and of James W. and Elizabeth Bloomer Bailey (Charles' parents), whose household included Abigail Loveless, Elizabeth Bloomer Bailey's mother.42
SonCharles and Ida's son Louis Smith was born on 16 September 1871.
(Widower) DeathHe became a widower when Ida J. Parmalee died on either the 2nd or 4th of February, 1874, at Marlborough, Ulster County, New York.13,41,12,43
(with Parents) Census1875StateSimUSHe appeared on the 1875 State Census of Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, in the household of his parents, James W. Bailey and Elizabeth Bloomer. His sons Nathaniel Irving, James Edgar, and Louis Smith were also living in the household. Son William Augustus Parmalee was living in town with Charles' in-laws, William L. and Rosetta Brower Parmalee.44
ResidenceHe stated that he lived between October 1878 and November 1918 at New York City, New York. Note, however, that Charles was emumerated in Marlborough, Ulster County, in 1880. See information under the 1880 federal census regarding a possible double enumeration for him.24
Occupation*He was an engineer on 7 June 1880.14
(with Parents) Census1880FedUSHe appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Marlborough, Ulster County, New York in the household of his parents, James W. Bailey and Elizabeth Bloomer. His sons Nathaniel Irving and James Edgar were also living in the household. Son William Augustus Parmalee was living in town with Charles' in-laws, William L. and Rosetta Brower Parmalee, and son Louis Smith Bailey had been adopted by Walter Millard Bailey and Rosetta Cherry Bailey, Charles' brother and sister-in-law, in New York City. The 1880 enumeration for Walter included a Charles A. Bailey, age 26 (10 years younger than our Charles) who was an engineer, and I think this is a second enumeration for our Charles, since he may have been staying with Walter and Rosetta while working in New York City. On military pension paperwork he said he moved to New York City in 1878.14,45
Marriage*He married second Frances Calista Wilson on 24 February 1884 at New York City, New York. They had no children. This was Frances' first marriage. Stephen Merritt officiated. In New York City, Charles worked as an engineer at DeVoe-Reynolds, and then became chief engineer at The American Bible Society's Bible House at Astor Square, NYC, where he worked for 25 years before retiring. He seems to have retired about 1918, at the time he and Calista moved to Kingston, so he would have worked for Bible House from approximately 1893.46,47,48,37,11,10,17
ResidenceHe and Frances Calista Wilson lived in 1890 at 74 Horatio Street, New York City, New York.49
(Witness) NoteOn 19 March, 1896, Charles Augustus Bailey was a witness for the Civil War pension application of his brother Walter Millard Bailey, with whom he had served; In 1896 he applied for a Civil War pension.50,51
ResidenceHe and Frances Calista Wilson lived on 19 March 1896 at 74 Horatio Street, New York City, New York.50
ResidenceHe and Frances Calista Wilson lived on 7 May 1898 at 325 West 13th Street, New York City, New York.46
OccupationHe was an engineer, presumably at Bible House, on 13 June 1900.10
Census1900FedUS*He and Frances Calista Wilson appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Manhattan, New York, at 35 Bank Street, enumerated 13 June 1900. Charles' son Louis Smith Bailey was listed as living with them, along with his wife Mary Georgia Smith and their children Laura Gertrude Bailey and Calista Mildred Bailey. Louis S. Bailey is described here as Charles' son, although he was apparently adopted by Walter Millard Bailey, Charles' brother.10
Note*On 24 February 1909, Charles and Frances celebrated their 25th anniversary with an open house at 81 Jane Street, New York City, New York, from 8-12 in the evening.52
OccupationHe was a building engineer, presumably at Bible House, on 21 April 1910.11
Census1910FedUS*He and Frances Calista Wilson appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of New York City, New York, at 81 Jane Street, enumerated 21 April 1910. Charles' grandson Clarence William Bailey was shown as living with them. In 1911 and 1912 Charles' grandson Howard Tucker Bailey was also shown living with them at this address..11
(Witness) MarriageHe and his wife Frances hosted the wedding of his grandson Clarence William Bailey to Josephine Adams on 1 January 1911 at 81 Jane Street, New York City, New York.53,54,37,55,56
(Witness) MarriageHe and Frances (Calista) hosted the wedding of Howard Tucker Bailey and Margaret Chitty on 8 May 1912 at their home at 81 Jane Street, New York City, New York.57,58,59,60,61,62,63,64
ResidenceHe and Frances Calista Wilson lived on 19 May 1914 at 81 Jane Street, New York City, New York.65
ResidenceHe and Frances Calista Wilson lived on 6 April 1915 at 2327 Walton Avenue, New York City, New York.47
OccupationHe was an engineer, presumably at Bible House, in 1916.66
ResidenceHe and Frances Calista Wilson lived in 1916 at 2327 Walton Avenue, New York City, New York.66
Moved*In November 1918, Charles Augustus Bailey and Frances Calista Wilson moved to Kingston, Ulster County, New York. (Frances died there in December 1923, and Charles stayed until November, 1924.).24
Note*On 15 January 1920, Charles was apparently retired.17
Census1920FedUS*He and Frances Calista Wilson appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Kingston, Ulster County, New York, at 39 Tietjen Avenue, enumerated 15 January 1920. They owned their home and had a mortgage.17
(Widower) DeathHe became a widower when Frances Calista Wilson died on 5 December 1923 at Kingston, Ulster County, New York. (There is a note in the family history that she died in Jersey City, NJ, but I think that is unlikely).37,48,13
Marriage*Sometime after 1 January 1924, Charles Augustus Bailey may have been married a third time to a Mrs. (?) Lynch. Peg Bailey Blackburn stated that this marriage did take place, and that Mrs. Lynch was the nurse who cared for Calista before she died. Peg remembered her as a sweet person, and Charles as a small guy with a long white beard. No mention of this wife was found on Charles' death certificate, nor is she buried with Charles, although she may have been buried with an earlier husband. In addition, when Charles died, his Civil War pension was cancelled and no surviving spouse was named. I have found no primary evidence of the marriage, and other family notes show that following Calista's death Charles went to reside with his son Louis Smith Bailey at Hastings-on-Hudson, living with him until he died in 1927.67,68,69
(Witness) ResidenceBetween 24 November 1924 and 4 December 1927, Charles Augustus Bailey lived in the household of his son and daughter-in-law, Louis Smith Bailey and Mary Babbitt at Hastings-on-Hudson, Westchester County, New York.24,68,37,70
Death*He died on 4 December 1927 at Louis Smith Bailey's home at 154 Edgars Lane, Hastings-on-Hudson, Westchester County, New York, at age 83.71,69,68,13
Burial*He was buried on 6 December 1927 at Riverside Cemetery, Marlborough, Ulster County, New York,, alongside his first two wives, Ida J. Parmalee and Frances Calista Wilson.34,69
Notes* Notes from Howard Louis Bailey and Peg Bailey (Blackburn):
- Charles served with his father as a carpenter in Marlboro, and helped his father build a row of houses just below West Point.
- Peg Bailey's stated that Howard Louis Bailey had Charles' framed honorable discharge from the Civil War. I have been unable to locate this item in HLB's possessions.
- Peg Bailey: "One time when we were small (I was about 5 or 6), he was visiting us at 24 Union Ave., Belleville, NJ. Sister (Muriel) and I were playing on the sidewalk when some older boys came along and started to tease us. When Grandpa found out, he came along with his cane, hooked it 'round the neck of one of the boys, and read him the riot act about teasing little girls."37
